Should Biden Declare a Climate Emergency?

Updated: Aug 16, 2022

Given Congress' recent failure to pass legislation on climate change, many activists are calling on President Biden to declare a climate emergency. If he were to do so, it would open funding options to help the US transition away from fossil fuels to green energy. However, we could expect such a declaration to trigger potentially successful judicial challenges from republican-led states and the fossil-fuel industry.

Because climate change is advancing at a more rapid pace than scientists originally projected, many environmentalists are calling for Biden to issue the emergency declaration anyway, and they might be right.

Let's imagine a best-case scenario where Biden uses his executive power to take action. New funding streams for green-energy projects accelerate transformation. The court challenges may come, but in the meantime US voters have recognized the gravity of our planetary crisis. Citizens vote in the midterm elections for representatives that also recognize the need to protect the environment, and so they accomplish what has thus far eluded the 117th Congress.

If you like the sound of that, let's do it! Let's call for Biden to declare a climate emergency now. Let's vote green in November. Let's make sure that the US and its allies are not at the mercy of oil-rich oligarchies to keep the lights on. And by doing all of that, let's ensure a stable future for our children and the other creatures that share our planet.
